HOW TO MAKE SURE PROJECTS AND STRATEGIES DON’T FADE AWAY.
STOPPING INTERPERSONAL MUSH IN YOUR TEAM.
Last newsletter we looked at what Gervase Bushe calls Interpersonal Mush and how it can cause communication and culture to fail that ultimately slows or stops important plans from moving the business forward. In this edition we’ll talk about how to recognize it and turn it around.
The biggest tell for Interpersonal Mush is when important strategies are forgotten after a few months or fail to reach the goals laid out. Associated with this are early clues that will ultimately lead to the lack of positive improvement. Do you get questions about details of the plan(s) that you thought were well laid out in the the initial presentation? Are you hearing about members of the team not moving forward on their areas of responsibility? Are variations of the plan(s) coming from different groups? Does one day seem like the one before with little change? Are follow up meetings frustrating because details of the plan need to be revisited instead of talking about the results to date.
Without organizational clarity the communication and culture needed to move strategic planning forward doesn’t get the attention it needs. At best it gets watered down, at worst it slowly disappears.
What is needed to minimize this Interpersonal Mush.
Clarity
In leadership, clear and precise communication stands as the key path to effectiveness. By mastering this skill, leaders inspire trust, create alignment, and drive organizational success. Setting clear expectations, articulating vision and strategy, providing timely updates, and simplifying complex ideas empower leaders to elevate communication, strengthen teams, and navigate challenges with confidence. Embracing clarity paves the way for understanding, collaboration, and shared success.
Trust
A high-trust organization is one where employees feel safe to take risks, express themselves freely, and innovate. Trust fosters collaboration and effective communication, making tasks easier to accomplish and driving more successful outcomes.
To build trust, leaders should:
· Be transparent: Share information openly and candidly. Keep the team informed about company updates and decisions at the senior leadership level. Avoid withholding resources or making decisions in secrecy.
· Be authentic: Authenticity begins with self-awareness—understanding one’s values, strengths, emotional intelligence, and how others perceive them.
· Be reliable: Align actions with words. Employees lose faith in leaders who fail to follow through on their commitments.
By embodying these principles, leaders create a culture of trust that empowers teams and drives organizational success.
Managing Uncertainty
A leader’s role is to communicate a positive vision of the future and inspire others to pursue it. In times of uncertainty, often associated with change, a clear vision provides lasting motivation beyond mere survival, helping people stay focused and resilient. By framing the organization’s ambition within a well-crafted vision, leaders can transform uncertainty into a necessary step toward long-term goals. A strong vision extends beyond immediate challenges, giving people the perspective and motivation needed to navigate uncertainty with confidence.
Summary
When team members feel engaged and share a sense of purpose, they are more likely to express their feelings, concerns, and opinions openly. In contrast, low trust fosters evasion, defensiveness, and competition. Leaders must build trust, have a clear vision and then communicate clearly to ensure employees understand the organization's goals, policies, vision, and—most importantly—the company's strategies during times of change.

1. Set clear, specific goals: Whether it’s personal growth or team objectives, clarity begins with specific goals that can be measured.
2. Create an open feedback loop: Establish regular feedback channels—both formal and informal. Make it a routine part of team culture.
3. Embrace accountability: Create a culture where feedback is received as a tool for growth rather than criticism.
4. Communicate frequently: Clear communication ensures that everyone understands priorities, updates, and changes as they happen.
